What the budget actually reaches

£2,000 per person is a real luxury budget in Europe and a mid-range one beyond it. That is not a criticism of long-haul — it is arithmetic. A honeymoon budget is a single pot covering flights, accommodation, transfers and everything you do while you are there, and long-haul flights claim a large fixed slice of it before you have chosen a hotel.

Within the Mediterranean, the Canaries or Madeira, flights are typically a small proportion of the total. That leaves the great majority of the budget available for the room, which is why a short-haul honeymoon at this level can credibly mean a sea-view suite, a proper spa and dinners out, rather than a compromise on all three.

Go to the Indian Ocean or the Caribbean on the same money and the balance inverts. The flight, and often a seaplane or boat transfer on top, becomes the largest single line, and the hotel budget shrinks to match. Both are legitimate honeymoons; they are simply different purchases.

Why flight cost dominates long-haul

Long-haul fares are far less flexible than short-haul ones. A European route has many carriers, several UK departure airports and frequent services, so prices respond to competition and to your willingness to move dates. A route to a single-airport island destination often has one or two operators and a handful of weekly flights, which removes most of the leverage you would normally have.

Seasonality compounds it. The months you want for the Caribbean or the Maldives are precisely the months everyone else wants, because they are the dry ones — and unlike a Mediterranean shoulder season, the alternative is not simply quieter but genuinely wetter.

The practical consequence is that on a long-haul honeymoon you should price the flights first and let them set the hotel budget, rather than choosing a resort and hoping the flights fit. Doing it the other way round is how long-haul honeymoons quietly become £3,000pp honeymoons.

Shoulder seasons and the fortnight after the wedding

Most weddings happen between May and September, and most couples travel immediately afterwards — which places the honeymoon in the most expensive weeks of the European year. Delaying by a few weeks is the single most effective way to increase what the budget buys.

A wedding in late July followed by a honeymoon in late September is a materially different purchase from the same trip taken the week after the ceremony, on identical money. Late September and early October in Greece, Italy and southern Spain still give you reliable warmth with far less competition for the good rooms.

Splitting the trip is the other option worth considering: a few nights away straight after the wedding, and the main honeymoon in a cheaper month. It also solves the practical problem that a long-haul flight two days after your own wedding is rarely as restful as it looks on paper.

Honeymoon perks are requested, not automatic

Room upgrades, sparkling wine on arrival, a decorated bed and a dinner on the terrace are common honeymoon gestures, but almost none of them are contractual. They are discretionary, subject to availability, and they depend on the hotel knowing.

So tell them at the point of booking, in writing, and again a few days before you travel. Some properties ask for a copy of the marriage certificate or apply a time limit — typically a set number of months after the wedding date — so check the conditions rather than assuming you qualify.

It also pays to be specific about what you actually want. A quiet room away from the pool bar is worth more to most couples than a bottle of fizz, and it is a request a hotel can usually accommodate if it is made early.

Finally, on prices: treat any figure you see — including ours — as indicative until it is confirmed on the partner's own site with your dates, your airport and your room type. Honeymoon pricing in particular moves with season and availability far more than with the destination you have picked.
